âWhy didnât you tell us about this?â Angie demanded.
Maria Bay sat quietly in the hospital waiting area. âPlease donât make a scene, Angie. It was your fatherâs wish not to burden you kids.â
âBurden us?â Catieâs pretty face reddened. âHeâs our father!â
âIt wasnât my choice, Caitlyn.â Maria shook her head. âIt was his. I wanted to tell you.â
âBut if weâd known, we could haveââ Angie stopped mid-sentence. Could have what? Treated him more kindly? Spent more time with him? Not thrown a fit about riding lessons and learning to ranch? She should have been doing all that anyway.
She was Daddyâs girl. Daddyâs princess. How could she have been so shallow? How could she have considered her fatherâs life work so unimportant? She plunked down next to her mother, buried her face in her hands, and wept.
Shaking hands rubbed her back lightly. âAngie, he might pull through.â
Angie turned and looked up into her motherâs sunken eyes. âMight? You heard what the doctor said. They wouldnât do the heart surgery because they were afraid he wouldnât live through it. Now with the heart attack, they have no choice. So heâs in worse condition, and you think heâll pull through? And if he does, the brain tumor will kill him within a month anyway.â
Her mother simply stared.
Harper sat down on her other side. âLay off her, Angie. This is the toughest on her.â
âHarperâs right,â Catie said.
âYou never even loved him,â Angie went on. âYou married him because you were pregnant with me. He deserved to be loved.â
âSo did Mom, Ang,â Catie said.
âWe did love each other.â Maria wiped her eyes. âWe grew to love each other very much. We just werenât in love.â
âYou denied him being in love?â Angie wrung her hands. âHow could you?â
âI didnât deny him anything. It was his decision to stay with me. After you came along, there was no way he would have left. He adored you, Angelina. You were the light of his eye. His princess.â
Just what she didnât need to hear at this moment. Angie sniffed, taking the tissue Catie handed her. Sheâd taken her father for granted for too long. Well, no longer. If he got through this, sheâd spend way more time with him. Sheâd learn everything in the world there was to know about ranching, and sheâd make him proud.
âHe was always proud of you,â her mother said softly, as though reading her mind. âAll three of you.â
âWe know that, Ma,â Harper said. âAnd he loved you too.â
âI know he did. We both sacrificed passion for you children, but that was our choice.â She looked at Angie. âAnd it was just as much his choice as mine.â
Angie looked up at the painting in the waiting areaâall red with black splotches. Sheâd first seen the painting when she sat in this very room during Zach McCrayâs illness over four years ago. That was the day sheâd given up on Zach forever. Heâd found true love with Dusty, now his wife. Heâd never loved Angie the way he loved Dusty, if at all.
